Driveway Requirements
The Town of Monroe requires a permit for any new driveway (or permanent access to a Town owned road). The most common requirements are:
- No driveway shall be located closer than 50 from the nearest street intersection.
- A paved apron must be installed from the roadway to the property line.
- The paved apron must be a minimum of 15 wide at the roadway and 10 wide at the property line.
- The paved apron must have a 1 lip.
- If the slope of the new driveway is greater than 5% (a 2 elevation difference 40 from the center of the existing roadway), then a parking platform must be installed.
- The parking platform does not have to be paved.
- The parking platform should be a minimum of 10W x 15L usually located next to the driveway in the road shoulder.
- Belgian block aprons may be installed at the owners risk. The Town of Monroe will not repair any damage that occurs from roadway maintenance activities. The Department of Public Works must be notified prior to installation to verify that the blocks do not protrude into the roadway.
The driveway permit is filled out in the Building Department when applying for the building permit. For questions, contact the Town Engineer, Scott Schatzlein @ 452-2814.
A $500 bond is required for every driveway (if you are installing a horseshoe driveway, the bond would be $1000). The bond is returned after the inspection is made by the Public Works Department to verify all requirements have been met. |
